Keratin Bonds vs Tape-In Extensions

Two methods, both professional, both natural-looking — but they suit different hair types, lifestyles and budgets. Here's an honest, side-by-side comparison from sisters who've fitted hundreds of both.

The at-a-glance comparison

  • You want a long-lasting result with minimal day-to-day fuss
  • Your hair is fine, thin or short and you need a discreet finish
  • You're going for major length (10+ inches)
  • You don't want maintenance appointments more than twice a year

Choose tape-ins if…

  • You want volume and length in a single appointment
  • You like to change your look seasonally (easier to remove)
  • Your hair is medium to thick and can hide the tape panels
  • You want lower upfront cost and are happy to maintain every 6–8 weeks
  • You want hair you can re-use across multiple refits

What we actually recommend (and why)

After fitting both methods hundreds of times, here's the honest truth: there's no universally "better" method. The right choice depends on your hair, your lifestyle, and your goals. That's why every new client at Sisters' starts with a free consultation — so we can look at your hair and recommend the method that will look best on you, not push the one we prefer to fit.

Most of our keratin bond clients come back for repeat fittings (which is why we get so many referral bookings). Most tape-in clients keep the same hair for 9–12 months with regular refits. Both methods work — the question is which one fits you.

Frequently asked about keratin vs tape-ins

  • Keratin bonds vs tape-ins — which lasts longer?

Keratin bonds last 3–6 months before needing removal and refitting; tape-ins are typically maintained every 6–8 weeks and the hair itself can be reused for up to 12 months. If you want fewer appointments, choose keratin. If you want flexibility and lower upfront cost, choose tape-ins.

  • Which is better for fine hair?

Keratin bonds — small individual bonds are less visible on fine hair and distribute weight evenly. Tape-ins can show through if your hair is very fine or thin at the roots.

  • Can I switch from tape-ins to keratin bonds?

Yes, but wait until your hair has fully recovered from the previous method (usually 4–8 weeks). We assess your natural hair at consultation before recommending the new method.

  • Which is more expensive?

Keratin bonds have a higher upfront cost because each bond is applied individually (2–4 hour appointment). Tape-ins are cheaper upfront but have more frequent maintenance visits, so total annual cost is comparable.

  • Do keratin bonds or tape-ins damage hair more?

Neither damages hair when applied and maintained by a certified specialist. Keratin bonds require heat for removal (done professionally). Tape-ins require careful adhesive removal. We assess your hair before either method.
