Can You Swim, Exercise, and Sleep with Hair Extensions?

These three questions come up in almost every consultation. The short answer: yes, you can live normally with extensions — but your aftercare habits determine how long they last.
Swimming
Chlorine and salt water dry out extension hair and can weaken bond adhesive over time. We do not tell clients to avoid swimming — but we do recommend rinsing hair with fresh water immediately after, then washing with sulphate-free shampoo when you get home.
For tape-ins, chlorine is harder on the tape adhesive. A swimming cap helps. If you swim several times a week, expect slightly shorter refit cycles — that is normal, not a fitting fault.
Exercise and gym
Sweat itself does not ruin extensions. The issue is leaving sweat and salt sitting against bonds or tape panels. Tie hair in a loose braid or ponytail during workouts, and rinse or wash after heavy sessions.
Avoid tight high ponytails that pull on bonds at the hairline — this is one of the most common causes of premature bond loss.
Sleeping
Sleep with dry hair. Wet bonds and tape weaken overnight. A loose braid or low ponytail reduces tangling. Silk or satin pillowcases cut friction — clients who switch often notice less matting at the nape.
Never sleep with wet extensions. If you wash at night, blow-dry the bond or tape area on a cool setting before bed.
Products to avoid
Keep oils, serums, and leave-in conditioners away from bonds and tape panels — at least 5 cm from the attachment point. Sulphates strip extension hair faster than your natural hair.
Dry shampoo is fine in moderation, but build-up near bonds causes slipping. Clarifying shampoos should only be used on mid-lengths and ends, never at the root.
When to book maintenance early
If you swim or train daily and notice bonds feeling loose or tape edges lifting before your scheduled appointment, message us. An early maintenance visit is cheaper than replacing slipped extensions or fixing matting.
