How Long Do Hair Extensions Actually Last? The Real Numbers
By Mădălina · 5 May 2026
The honest answer to 'how long do extensions last' depends on three things: the method, your aftercare, and your hair growth cycle. Here's what we actually see across hundreds of fittings.
Keratin bonds
The marketing claim is '3–6 months'. The reality: most of our clients get 4–5 months from a fitting before needing removal. A few get 6+. A small number lose bonds earlier than expected — usually due to oily scalp, vigorous brushing, or skipping maintenance.
Tape-ins
The marketing claim is '6–8 weeks between refits'. The reality: most of our clients get 6–7 weeks before the panels need refitting. The hair itself, with regular refits, lasts 9–12 months for most clients before needing replacement.
What makes extensions last longer
Aftercare
The biggest factor. Clients who follow our aftercare guide (sulphate-free products, gentle brushing, no heavy oils near bonds) consistently get 1–2 months more from each fitting than clients who don't.
Hair type
Coarser hair holds extensions longer than fine hair. Oily scalp can shorten bond life. Very dry hair can cause tangling around bonds.
Maintenance
Clients who book their maintenance appointment at the right time (not 2 months late) get longer overall life from their extensions.
Lifestyle
Swimming, sun, hard water, gym sweat — all reduce extension life. Living with these factors means accepting a shorter cycle.
When extensions need replacing
The honest signs: bonds lifting or feeling loose, tape panels slipping, tangling that won't brush out, extension hair looking dull or matted. If any of these happen, book a maintenance appointment rather than waiting for the full cycle.
