Hair Extensions Aftercare: The Complete Guide for 2026

By Mădălina · 15 June 2026

Your extensions will only look as good as the care you put into them. After fitting hundreds of keratin bond and tape-in clients, here's the honest aftercare guide — what to do, what to avoid, and when to book a maintenance appointment.

The first 48 hours matter most

The first two days after your fitting set the tone for the next 3–6 months. During this window, avoid washing your hair, leave it down (no tight buns or ponytails), and skip any heavy styling products. This gives the bonds or tape adhesive time to fully set.

  • Don't wash hair for 48 hours after application
  • Sleep with hair loose or in a very loose braid
  • Avoid steam rooms, saunas, and very hot showers
  • Skip hair spray, gel, or any heavy products near the bonds

Washing — the right way

Wash every 2–3 days with sulphate-free shampoo. Daily washing strips natural oils and dries out the bonds or tape adhesive.

  1. Brush thoroughly before getting in the shower
  2. Use lukewarm (not hot) water
  3. Apply sulphate-free shampoo to the scalp only — let it run through the lengths
  4. Condition only the ends, never the bonds or tape panels
  5. Rinse thoroughly and towel-grip gently (don't rub)
  6. Apply leave-in conditioner to ends, air-dry or blow-dry on medium heat

Brushing — the number one mistake

The single biggest cause of premature bond loss is brushing incorrectly. Use a loop brush or wet brush — never a paddle brush or bristle brush. Hold the hair above the bonds with one hand to prevent tugging, then brush from mid-lengths down in sections, working tangles from the ends up.

Sleeping

Loose braid or low ponytail — never a tight bun on top of the head. A silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction. Never sleep with wet extensions.

Heat styling

You can curl, straighten, and blow-dry extensions — just keep heat off the bonds themselves. Always use a heat protectant and keep tools 2+ inches from bonds or tape panels.

Swimming, sun & gym

All fine. Rinse with fresh water after swimming, use UV-protectant products in summer, and tie hair in a loose braid for gym sessions.

When to book a maintenance appointment

Don't wait for something to go wrong. Book a refit based on your method's timeline — tape-ins every 6–8 weeks, keratin bonds removal and refit at 3–6 months.
