How to Choose a Hair Extensionist in East London (Without Getting Burned)
By Mădălina · 30 May 2026
East London — Dagenham, Barking, Romford, Ilford — has more hair salons per square mile than you'd expect. Many of them offer hair extensions as a side service. Some do it well. Most don't. Here's how to spot the difference before you book.
Red flag #1: "We'll just see how your hair looks on the day"
If a salon can't give you a clear guide price before your appointment, they're pricing reactively, not from experience. A specialist should be able to give you a price range from photos and a phone call.
Red flag #2: One method fits all
If a salon only offers one method (usually tape-ins — the easier one to learn), they're pushing what they can do, not what you need. A specialist offers both keratin bonds and tape-ins and recommends based on your hair.
Red flag #3: No before/after photos of their own clients
Every specialist has a portfolio of their own work. If they're using stock images on Instagram, run.
Red flag #4: Junior stylist "to save money"
If you're booked with an apprentice or junior, that's not a specialist fitting. The most expensive part of hair extensions is the application — that's where the expertise matters.
Red flag #5: No aftercare guidance
If a salon fits extensions and sends you home without written aftercare instructions, they don't expect to see you again. A specialist's reputation depends on your extensions lasting 3–6 months.
What to ask before booking
- How many fittings have you done in the last 6 months?
- Who will be doing my fitting — and what's their experience?
- Do you offer both keratin bonds and tape-ins?
- Can I see before/after photos of clients with similar hair to mine?
- What's included in the price?
- What's the aftercare protocol?
A specialist will answer all of these confidently and without hesitation. If you get vague answers or pushback, walk away.
